Jeremy Oertel is an artist based between New York City and the Hudson Valley. His work uses color, shape, and negative space to build quiet compositions that feel both direct and slightly unstable.
Artist statement
My paintings begin with simple formal questions: how much weight can a color hold, how little information does a shape need, and where does a composition start to feel alive? The work is abstract, but it is not detached. I am interested in paintings that carry a sense of weather, landscape, architecture, and memory without becoming literal images of those things.
I build each piece through a process of editing. Forms are placed, reduced, shifted, and sometimes almost erased until the painting reaches a specific kind of tension. The final image should feel resolved, but not closed. I want the work to hold still and continue moving at the same time.
Studio background
The current body of work focuses on bold, pared-down compositions: saturated fields, compressed horizons, imperfect geometry, and organic forms that sit somewhere between symbol and landscape. The paintings are made for close viewing, but they are also intended to hold a room.
For commissions, the process begins with scale, palette, placement, and the character of the space. The goal is not to match a room decoratively, but to make a piece that has a clear relationship to where it will live.
